Infant Oral Care

As paediatric dentists who are specialists in children’s dentistry, we recommend the first visit to the dentist occurs at the appearance of your child’s first tooth or the child’s first birthday, whichever happens first. Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dentistry includes services that may contribute to helping maintain your child’s good oral health, which can include preventing cavities, monitoring for gum and bone disease, avoiding dental infections and preventing tooth fractures and mouth injuries. Some preventive measures that are often discussed with the dentist include maintaining a healthy diet for children, routine dental examinations, taking X-rays, keeping regular routine intervals for dental cleanings, treating higher cavity risk teeth with dental sealants, using in-office and home fluoride regimens, considering the use of silver diamine fluoride and using sports mouthguards.

Sedation Dentistry

Paediatric dentists are experts when it comes to treating children’s dental anxiety and getting dental work completed under difficult situations. Some children require additional support to ensure a positive dental appointment. For example, some children may have anxiety, may have had a difficult past dental experience, are medically compromised or have other diverse needs. At The Children’s Dental Centre, we are committed to supporting you and your child, so that the experience is a positive one.

Pharmacological management may be a helpful option to treat your child’s dental needs safely and/or help prevent emotional trauma. In our office, we offer numerous types of sedation, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation (laughing gas with an oral medication), in-office general anesthesia and outpatient hospital general anesthesia.

Prior to any treatment, we will have a thorough conversation about all of our sedation options, and you, as the parent, will decide what is best for your child and family. Please contact our office at 416-252-KIDS(5437) to schedule an appointment today.

Emergency Dental Care

At The Children’s Dental Centre, we are available to consult with you regarding your child’s urgent dental inquiries during regular office hours as well as after hours.  Toothaches, dental infections and traumatic tooth injuries are the most common types of dental emergencies that we treat.

Toothaches can be disruptive enough to cause children to stop brushing their teeth, change their usual eating habits, stop drinking, stop usual playtime behaviour and stop sleeping well. As parents, we become very anxious when our children are in pain. Please contact us as soon as you determine that your child may be in pain. It is important to consult the dentist prior to giving your child any type of medication.

Dental infections can arise quickly in children. If left untreated, the infection that may have originated in a tooth may spread to the cheek or neck and require a visit to the hospital emergency room.

Dental trauma such as enamel, root or jaw fractures or when a tooth is knocked out of the mouth, are considered dental emergencies. If your child has suffered a head injury at the time of the dental trauma, please consult a medical professional at a hospital emergency room before contacting us. Head injuries should be cleared by a physician prior to making an appointment at our office; however, contact us as soon as possible after the injury so that we can make appropriate dental recommendations in a timely manner.

If the dental emergency occurs after hours, please feel free to page our dentist on call. You can find more information on how to do this by calling our office at 416-252-KIDS(5437).
